Canola oil demand worldwide
(Source - Oil World)
Statistical data collected by "Oil World" shows that canola oil consumption has risen from 12.5 million metric tonnes (MT) in 2003 to nearly 20 million (MT) in 2008 - a year over growth rate of 8 percent per year. (See Chart 1)
This is a result of higher incomes in the newly-emerging economies of the world. As people become wealthier, they have shifted their preferences away from 'cheap' edible oils and fats, and toward canola.

Long-Term Demand (1966 to 2004)
(Source - USDA)
Chart 2(a) shows canola oil demand over the past four decades. Note that it wasn't until 1985 that the Food and Drug Administration determined that canola oil was an "edible oil" when GRAS ("Generally regarded as safe") status was granted. Since 1995, our desire to add "healthy oil" as part of our daily diet has increased canola demand in the United States faster than corn, palm, cotton, sunflower and peanut oil. (See Chart 2(b))
